WIU hires Mac Irvin Fire's Nick Irvin

This is a home run for WIU in my opinion. He and Jeter will have a chance to really turn things around in Macomb.

Not sure I can say this without sounding like a smartalec, but there's nowhere to go but up for WIU, right? Aren't they perennially in the bottom 5% of RPI every year? It seems to me if Jeter and Irvin get 'em to .500, their best course of action would be to declare victory and move on to another program and WIU falls back into the dregs.

From all accounts, Macomb is quite the hard sell for fellas not from the area, can they overcome that to get the talent in there to actually get better?

I suppose Irvin can check the box of "College Assistant" but does he need some level of success for it to be worth it (reputationally)? Does it matter?

I agree WIU definitely "overachieved" with Jeter and Irvin, but they've got one heckuva hill to climb.

This is a no-lose situation for Irvin and Jeter.

If they lose - "It's WIU and Macomb, what do you expect"?
If they win - "Holy crap, you did what? - Come on board"

I wouldn't be surprised to see Western become a destination for relatively talented players in the Irvin network that can't go elsewhere (yet) due to grades, (poor) reputation, or legal transgressions... Western U become "Second Chance U" as they're rebuilt into respectability.

I wonder if Nick realized there is no AAU this summer, so he won’t get that AAU coaching $, and that pushed him to the idea of college paycheck? (I know he still has his high school job)

Interestingly, the Irvin's now are firmly planted in the 2 worst DI programs and toughest places in-state, with Lance the head coach at Chicago State.

I just do not see good players going to WIU to play basketball unless they are given envelopes full of cash. Macomb has to be one of the worst college towns period.

If Jeter can hold onto Irvin long enough to inject talent, Forgottonia could be in for a fun era. If he loses as an assistant, he should try to bring in Lance, who already lost the AD who hired him (Zorich).

WIU will get at least (2) former Morgan Park players (I think UAB and EIU transfers)

Burrell played at EIU only a year, during the 2018-19 season, before he transferred out. He played this past season at Highland Community College in Freeport.

At one time I would not like this from A BU perspective. But we no longer seem to recruit the public league.

Why not try it?

And then probably join Chin in Champaign.

Underwood and crew have it going right now.
Hinton isn’t even close to being a thought in Champaign.
Has Kathy Griffin been arrested?
What a talentless, attention starved person.

Their 7 fans should enjoy it. The NCAA will have a field office setup there by 2022.

I'm no TAS, but if there was ever a time to renew the series with WIU wouldn't this be it??? Home and home it so you don't have to buy them if you are concerned about paying...they should win a ton of games for the next year or two. I don't see many negatives here...thoughts?

In a budget related way (and WIU has to be fairly concerned with budget), I don't see a benefit for Western. Why take a game at BU when you could fill that slot with a buy game and bring home a 60k+ check? The return game @WIU isn't going to generate nearly enough to cover that type of buy game check they miss out on.

How a guy as good and entrenched in the scene as Joe Henrickson can write this with a straight face is ridiculous. Come on man.

The closest example in terms of local recruiting is mid-major Northern Illinois in the mid-1980s, when West Aurora’s Kenny Battle led a parade of west suburban stars to DeKalb. That famed class included DeKalb all-stater Deron White, Class A all-stater Jim Edmondson, East Aurora’s Rodney Davis and Battle’s West Aurora teammate Randy Norman. (Battle transferred to Illinois after his sophomore year after becoming the fastest player to 1,000 career points in NIU history.)
I wonder how prescient this anecdote will be. Will WIU simply act like a glorified JuCo and serve only as a rest stop or stepping stone to another program for all these guys?
