In League Two, an exciting and crazy finish.

Bristol Rovers needed to win by 5 more goals than Northampton to secure autopromotion to League One.

Northampton won 3:1 meaning Rovers then needed to win by 7 goals, and they defeated Scunthorpe 7:0.

Rovers' manager is Joey Barton.

The odds on Barton doing something that results in jail, suspension or termination of employment tonight is favorable.

League Two final results:

Forest Green Rovers win the title on GD, with Exeter City matching their 84 points. They will be joined by Bristol Rovers in next year's League One as the three auto promoting teams.

The second tiebreaker was the difference between autopromotion and having to go through the playoff, with Northampton matching Bristol Rovers' +22 GD, but Bristol scoring 11 more goals on the campaign (71 to 60).

The playoff pairings for the fourth and final promotion spot:

(4) Northampton Town vs. (7) Mansfield Town
(5) Port Vale vs. (6) Swindon Town

On the relegation end, Oldham Athletic and Scunthorpe are bounced from EFL. Oldham has fallen out of the League for the first time in their history, and they venture outside the top 4 flights for the first time ever. They were a founding member of the Premier League having won promotion to Division 1 in 1991, and managed to stay up for the founding of the Premier League after one season in the top flight. They were FA Cup semifinalists in 1990 and 1994 (the latter missing the final only by a Mark Hughes equalizer with less than a minute in stoppage time, forcing a replay which was lost), and EFL Cup runner-up in 1990. They were relegated from the Premier League following the 1993-94 season.

For Scunthorpe (who were terrible with a -61 GD, including today's 7:0 loss) it ends a run in League Football that dates to 1950.

Still don't feel entirely comfortable but feel like Everton is in a lot better spot to avoid relegation after today's 1:2 win at Leicester City.

City put themselves in the driver's seat, adding 2 goals in stoppage time to stomp Newcastle 5:0. The win puts City 3 points up on Liverpool, with 9 points left to play for. But more importantly, City has gone up 4 in GD on Liverpool as well, having outscored their opponents 17:1 in their 4 league wins since City and Liverpool drew 2:2 on April 10.

Interestingly, both City and Liverpool have to play both Wolves and Aston Villa (inverting H-H/A-A).

FIFA and EA failed to reach a licensing agreement, meaning that FIFA will no longer be the namesake of the ground-breaking soccer videogame series. Following the release of FIFA 23, future EA releases will be known as EA Sports FC.

Also of note is the Ryan Reynolds & Rob McIlhenny-owned Wrexham defeating previously top Stockport County 3:0 to take over first in the National League (5th tier) which puts 2 teams into the EFL, one on autopromotion and one through a six-team playoff.

However, while it is a huge win, Stockport has an extra match in hand and there are still 3 or 4 matches remaining in the National League season.

Watford has hired Forest Green manager Rob Edwards to lead the team into the 2022-23 season as the relegated club venture into the Championship.

Edwards led Forest Green to the League Two title this year, resulting in their promotion to League One.

While a longshot, it is possible that Manchester City and Liverpool could be headed to a title playoff in Week 39:

Tiebreaker order:

1) Goal differential
2) Goals scored
3) Head-to-head
4) Playoff between involved teams, if necessary

Both teams are level at 86 points, but Liverpool have a match in hand.
Manchester City currently is +3 on GD.
Both teams have 89 goals scored.
Both league matches finished as 2:2 draws.

Nottingham Forest wins the first leg of the promotion playoff 2:0 over Sheffield United which gives them a solid foot in the promotion final, which would be their second appearance in 3 years if they can close the series out.

Wycombe and Sunderland will meet in the League One promotion final, to determine who will be the third team to promote to the Championship for next season.

Sunderland is looking to end a four-year spell outside England's top two flights. Prior to this stretch, they had only had one season (1987-88) with that fate in their entire history.

Stockport County clinched the National League championship and League Two promotion with a win coupled with Wrexham's 3:0 defeat to Dagenhime & Redbridge, who were fighting for a playoff spot on the final match day.

The promotion playoffs for the second entry into the EFL for next season will look like this:

(5) Notts County vs. (6) Grimbsy Town
(4) FC Halifax Town vs. (7) Chesterfield

Semifinals

(2) Wrexham vs. Notts County/Grimsby Town winner
(3) Solihull Moors vs. Halifax Town/Chesterfield winner

Wrexham is playing in the FA Trophy Final against fellow National League side Bromley. The FA Trophy is the EFL Cup equivalent for tiers 5-8 in the English league system.

Darn. . .was rooting for Luton Town. But also rooting for Forest, so at least if Forest advances I won't be torn for the final.

How bad would it have looked for the Premier League had Luton gotten in based on how small their stadium is?

They are close to building a new one, I believe.

23,000 seat stadium with a target date of 2024. In the current Premier League, that would put it ahead of Brentford Community Stadium, Turf Moor, and Vicarage Road.
