Cubs sign top pick Schwarber
Cubs sign top pick Schwarber
The Cubs have signed top pick Kyle Schwarber with a bonus of $3.125M, almost $1.5M below slot value. Combined with the approximate $100K they appear ready to save on their other early catcher pick Mark Zagunis, the club appears primed to build a considerable war chest to woo some of their later picks with questionable signability.

The kid went 12-20 with 4 HRs in his first 5 games and was promptly promoted to Kane County.

It was goofy to send him to Boise in the first place.Beanie wrote:The kid went 12-20 with 4 HRs in his first 5 games and was promptly promoted to Kane County.

It will be interesting to see which level they move him to the outfield. Heard today that the Cubs and Samardzija are back talking again. Heard 5 years at now over 65 million. The money does not scare me because the Cubs have it, the years do.

I actually think that low in comparison to what he could get on the open market.soccerforever wrote:It will be interesting to see which level they move him to the outfield. Re: Cubs sign top pick Schwarber
From what I heard, the Cubs started at 5 years at 60 and Jeff was at 5 years at 90. I know he does not have a lot of work on that arm but he would have a hard time finding 5 years on the market. The next 30 days will probably tell all.Beanie wrote:I actually think that low in comparison to what he could get on the open market.soccerforever wrote:It will be interesting to see which level they move him to the outfield. Cubs, Jeff Samardzija talking deal again
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
The Cubs are again discussing a longterm deal with pitcher Jeff Samardzija, reports the Chicago Sun-Times. It's still a five-year offer, but for more than the $60-million to $65-million range previously discussed by the parties, the report said.
Trade talk continues to swirl around Samardzija, who can become a free agent after the 2015 season.

Re: Cubs sign top pick Schwarber
He turned down $85 mil according to this article:
http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball ... offer.html
Cubs ace Jeff Samardzija’s ticket out of Chicago appears to be punched after he reportedly turned down the club’s latest five-year offer for what a source said was close to the $17.5 million average of Reds pitcher Homer Bailey’s six-year deal.
The Sun-Times reported Monday that the Cubs had increased their five-year offer worth between $60 million and $65 million from earlier this year. Fox Sports reported Wednesday that the rejected offer was worth $85 million.
Samardzija has been on the trading block since the end of last season. Teams including the Blue Jays, Angels and Giants scouted his start Tuesday against the Marlins. The Braves, Orioles and Mariners have been linked to him. The non-waiver trade deadline is July 31.

Can't say I blame him. He probably would like to play for a winner and have a chance at pitching in the playoffs.

If he turned that down then I hope he enjoys his next team. Bryant was finally moved to AAA. He is going to look good in the lineup with Rizzo next year.

Re: Cubs sign top pick Schwarber
Whatever team wants to give them the most is all I care about now. This guy is having a great year now and had 1 great year as a reliever. Besides that he had average years. If the dollars are getting that high I would rather see them add more money and go after a certain pitcher in Detroit this off season.squirrel wrote:I actually read the Royals this AM were getting very interested.soccerforever wrote:If he turned that down then I hope he enjoys his next team.
