2020: Baseball returns to the Olympics

Post by squirrel » Wed Nov 06, 2019 10:43 am

The US has advanced to the Super Round at the WBSC Premier12 tournament, which will allocate 2 spots in next summer's six-team Olympic baseball tournament.

The top finisher from the Americas and Asia will each secure an Olympic berth, with each zone holding a separate qualification tournament in the spring to secure one more spot for each zone.

Scott Brosius replaced Joe Girardi as manager, as Girardi resigned in mid-October while he was pursuing several managerial leads.

The US went 2-1 in the first round in Mexico, beating the Netherlands 6-1, losing to Mexico 8-2, and in the final game in what amounted to an elimination game, beat the Dominican Republic 10-8. Mexico went 3-0 in the group stage.

The Super Round will be a six-team stage held in Tokyo, which will feature the top 2 finishers from each group in the first round. The other groups are ongoing and being contested in Taiwan and Korea. Japan and Chinese Taipei have both secured passage to the Super Round from Taiwan, but still have to play each other today to determine seeding. Japan, of course would not be competing for a bid, as they already are in as hosts of the 2020 Olympics.

Canada won their opening game in Korea, 3-0 over Cuba. Korea and Australia feature in that group as well.

The Super Round will begin November 11, and again will be contested in Tokyo.

Israel won the Europe and Africa qualification event, and will be part of the six-team field.

The Super Round will consist of the US, Mexico, Japan, Chinese Taipei, South Korea, and Australia.

It looks like group stage results between advancing teams carry over, so the US starts 0-1. But really, they just have to best Mexico over the rest of the tournament to secure the Olympics bid, as the only two American squads.

The US defeated Japan 4-3, but lost 2-1 to Australia.

The US needs to defeat Chinese Taipei and have a better run differential than the winner of Chinese Taipei-Australia (both sit -2 RD to the US' -10) to reach the medal round.

If the US are eliminated, Mexico automatically claims one Americas spot for next summer's tournament, while the US will have to go through another round of qualification in the spring.
