Freshman debut

Post by dogsrus »

I was inspired by Hannah’s debut/coming out and made me think back 35 plus years to other debuts.....

The one that jumps out to me was Anthony Manuel.....

Anyone have one that they recall fondly....
So I was in the airport the other day and I saw AL B., PM me if you want more details.

The 2000-01 season opener at USC, with 3 freshmen starters: Marcello Robinson, Phil Gilbert and James Gillingham. Led 51-41 at halftime, but ultimately lost. Gilbert had 22 while Jerome Robinson started his senior year with a 31-point effort.

The following year, Granger with 17 rebounds and Tisby providing a spark as the Braves rolled the Cajuns by 22.

How are we defining debut? This wasn't a debut was it?

Mitchell Anderson had one of the best freshman campaigns in Bradley history. He was brought in by Versace to be "The Man" and was given the green light from day one. I don't recall his debut game but he averaged over 20 PPG his freshman year.

And yes, I'm THAT old. :bigsm

It wasn't the first game, but Fred Atkins had a 6-of-9 game from 3 against Oakland (then in their first year of reclassification to DI) as a frosh in a 20-point effort.

Besides his rebound total the kid had ZERO turnovers in 19 minutes! The only blemish is his FTs.

I wondered about Hersey’s debut stats (I couldn’t easily find game stats but he averaged high 30MPG so he obviously played quite well).

Hersey has finally been selected for the national college HOF:

Hawk scored 20 in his first game, a 12-point loss @ Loyola. Ramblers were led be Alfredrick Hughes and were beginning a Sweet 16 season (one of 2 in-states in the Sweet 16 that season, along with Illinois. Illinois State reached the second round, but lost to Oklahoma.)
