Galesburg Silver Streaks 2018-'19: Previews, Game Summaries, Stats

Post by gbbfan1 »

Practice starts today. The volleyball team finished 15-17, losing as expected last Tuesday in the Regional. Wonder if any of them took it upon themselves to get into open gym the rest of the week. At least, those people will have the entire pre-season practice period. Hopefully, those who didn’t play volleyball got started earlier. Daija Range (appendix) missed the second half of the volleyball season; maybe find out what the situation is at Meet The Streaks.

Scheduling their first game on Friday of week one, rather than the previous Tuesday, as has been done for years, will prove to be extremely beneficial. It gives them a much-needed extra full week of practice.
They will definitely benefit from the extra preparation time.

So, Daija Range is ready to go.

Key statement in the entire article: "Having four players that played significant minutes last year, our hope would be that they all make a jump and that experience translates into some positives for us."- The overriding unknown.

-Major issues-Offense in general, 3pt. FG shooting, TOs.

-Halfcourt “D” was consistently above average.

Galesburg 2018 Summer League Review

Play during the summer didn’t really provide any answers to questions about the team going into the summer.

Several factors contributed:
-Two of last year’s starters moving to new positions:
Kelsi Legge moving from PG to Wing.
Chloe McCarthy moving from Wing to F.
-Riley Jenkins moving up from Soph. team to starting PG.
-The general level of competition in the Galesburg Summer League wasn’t sufficient to be a reliable predictor of how the team would match up vs. the teams on their schedule; struggled vs. some small schools.

Galesburg Silver Streaks 2018-‘19 Preview

Schedule
http://masseybasketball.blogspot.com/20 ... .html#more
http://masseybasketball.blogspot.com/p/ ... 017-8.html

Varsity Roster
Projected Starters
Riley Jenkins 5’5” PG So.
Andrea Sampson 5’6” 2G Sr.
Kelsi Legge 5’7” Wing/PG Sr. (Wing-new position)
Chloe McCarthy 5’8” F Sr. (New position; Wing last year)
Daija Range 5’7” F Sr.

Bench
Audree Peck 5’10” F So.
Kaylee Miller 5’5” Wing Jr.
Alexia Tucker 5’7” F Sr.
Chelsea Stephenson 5’6” 2G Jr.

Lily Hudgens 5’5” 2G So.
Grace Nelson 5’2” PG Fr.
Abbie Endthoff 5’6” Wing Fr.
Abby Davidson 5’11” F Fr.

Normally, the players Massey uses during the summer and their roles remain consistent when the season starts notwithstanding any unforeseen circumstances; once in a while, a player who didn’t play much of a role during the summer takes it upon herself to bust her butt working in the off-season, and shows the ability to be a solid contributor once the season starts; have to wait and see.

Announcer’s Stats
Lost
Emily Meinert 5’11” F- 9.4 pts., 6.2 reb.
Yvonne Mixon 5’10” F- 8.1 pts., 8.5 reb, 1.5 steals, 1.7 blocks.

Bench
Daija Range 5’7” F Sr.- 2.2 pts., 3.5 reb
Riley Jenkins 5’5” PG So.- 1.9 pts., .9 assists, .5 reb

Unknowns
Offense in general, all phases of post play, 3pt. shooting, excessive TOs, leadership.

Winning Culture-Commitment
http://masseybasketball.blogspot.com/20 ... .html#more

Where are the Shanell Jacksons, Andie Allisons, Jenna Bicegos, Molly Watsons, Amanda Gunthers, Sara Woods, Brenna Salines, and Jessica Howards on this team? Was anyone doing the “unrequired work” during the offseason? Won’t take long to find out.

Tues. Nov. 21
Rock Island (1-0, 0-0) at Galesburg (2-1, 0-0)
The Register-Mail didn’t deem it necessary to print a preview.

Rock Island
Last Year: 23-8, lost to Edwardsville 48-44 OT (a royal screwin’ -23-2 disparity in FT attempts in favor of Edwardsville) in Champaign Centennial Sectional Final; vs. Galesburg-58-34, 77-37.

Lost
Starters
Chryslynn Carr 5’6” G- Texas Tech
Sophia Thomer 5’3” G
Lauren Hall 5’9” F
Anne Awour 6’5” C Jr.-transferred to Davenport North
Bench
Delaney Anderson 5’11” F
Alyse Parker 5’3” G

Return
Starter
Brea Beal 6’1” G/Wing/F Sr.- South Carolina
New Starters
Hannah Simmer 5’10” PF Jr.
Carlee Camrin 5’10” C, SF Sr.
Bre Williams 5’5” G Jr.
https://qctimes.com/sports/high-school/ ... 35891.html

Rock Island 69 Peoria Central 60
https://qctimes.com/sports/high-school/ ... 4afa9.html

So it’s Brea Beal against the world. She’s gonna get beat up pretty good. She’ll have to make a real effort to keep her cool. The zebras must take control of the situation early.

Even though this team is just a shadow of their former teams, they should still have little problem winning the conference. The other top teams from last year, Moline and United Township were decimated by graduation and a critical transfer. United Township’s budding star, 5’6 Jr G Izabella Sims transferred to Davenport North, joining Anne Awour.

Western Big 6
Rock Island 1-0
Moline 1-0
RI Alleman 1-0
Galesburg 0-1
United Township 0-1
Quincy 0-1

Rock Island 61 Galesburg 35
RI Alleman 42 United Township 37
Moline 43 Quincy 34

Nov. 29
Galesburg at United Township
Rock Island at Moline
Quincy at RI Alleman

Looking at the teams' pre-conference games, this conference is mediocre overall-Rock Island excepted. Although Rock Island is just a shadow of their teams of the last three years, with Brea Beal and some very promising younger players, I don't see anyone challenging them.

Galesburg (4-3,1-1) 45 United Township (0-6,0-2) 44 OT
https://www.galesburg.com/sports/201811 ... out-ot-win
https://qconline.com/sports/high_school ... 1ff5e.html

Ga 09-18-33-40-45
UT 07-13-28-40-44

Announcers’ Stats-The announcer who usually keeps the team stats was gone. The play-by-play man gave only the shooting stats. I tried to keep the others with limited success; didn’t even try to keep track of assists.

Jenkins-12pts., 3 2 pt. FGs, 2 3pt. FGs, 0-2 FTs, 1 reb, 2 steals, 1 blk.
Sampson-16pts., 2 2pt. FGs, 4 3pt. FGs, 3 reb, 2 blks.
Legge-8 pts., 3 2pt. FGs, 2-2 FTs, 5 reb, 1 blk.
McCarthy-2 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 4 reb, 4 steals, 1 blk.
Range-1 pt., 1-2 FTs, 7 reb, 1 blk.
Livingston-6 pts., 1 3pt. FG, 3-4 FTs.
9-19 2 pt. FGs (47%), 7-31 3pt. FGs (23%), 6-10 FTs (60%), assists ?, 8? steals, 7? blks, Reb-UT with sizable edge, TOs- Galesburg definitely won this aspect.

UT 0-5, but played much tougher schedule than Gales.
Ugly game overall, but exciting 4th qtr. and OT.
UT-3-2 zone (1-2-2 pt. extended) almost entire game.

4th Qtr.
-UT 8-2 run 36-35 @3:42
-@2:42 G up 37-36
-At about 2:00 G pulls back try to force UT out of zone
-G TO
-@1:33 UT 38-37
-G very deliberate on offense
-@1:08 UT TO
-@:33 Jenkins ‘3’ 40-38
-UT trouble getting shot t.o. @:18.5
-Hunter shakes loose inside-layup at buzzer
OT
-@2:55 Range fouls out (limited mins. in game, 2 fouls 1st qtr.) UT up 42-40
-@2:30 UT running extended possessions
-@1:50 UT backdoor layup 44-40
-@1:47 Massey t.o.
-@1:25 Sampson ‘3’ 44-43
-G fc press- UT TO @1:10
-@:43 Legge backdoor layup from Jenkins 45-44
-@:28 McCarthy blks. Hunter inside, off UT o.b.
-UT fc press
-Sampson long pass over D to Jenkins , fouled-misses front end of 1-and-1 @:23.9
-UT can’t a shot- t.o. @:10.3
- @:04.3 UT t.o.
- @:00.4 UT t.o.
-Jenkins deflects lob as time runs out.

UT missed several pt. blank shots-layups, off. reb putbacks.
Of Gales 9 2pt. FGs, I’d say 7 were layups-maybe 5 on backdoor layups off picks by posts; I can only remember a couple mid-range jumpers.
Gales-good execution last two scores-after t.o., getting Sampson a ‘3’ to close to 44-43 @1:25; Legge backdoor layup from Jenkins @:43 go up 45-44.

Galesburg (5-3) 59 Limestone (3-4) 27
https://www.galesburg.com/sports/201812 ... st-rockets

Lime 05-07-19-27
Gales18-38-50-59

Announcers’ Stats
Jenkins-10pts., 3 3pt. FGs, 1-2 FTs, 3 reb, 6 assists.
Sampson-13pts., 2 2pt. FGs, 3 3pt. FGs, 5 reb, 2 assists, 1 steal.
Legge-12 pts., 4 2pt. FGs, 4-4 FTs, 2 reb, 1 assist.
McCarthy-5 pts., 1 3pt. FG, 2-2 FTs, 3 reb, 1 assist, 2 blks.
Range-3 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 1-2 FTs, 7 reb, 2 assists, 2 steals, 3 blks.
Livingston-4 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 2-2 FTs, 2 reb, 1 assist, 1 steal.

Stevenson-2 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 2 reb, 1 steal.
Tucker-2 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 1 reb, 1 steal, 1 blk.
Davidson-2 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 1 reb.
11-27 2pt. FGs, 9-19 3pt. FGs, 10-12 FTs, 15 assists, 7 steals, 3 blks, Reb-Gales 31(12), Lime 20(9),
TOs-Gales 11 Lime 16.

-Not much to add to the R-M article.
-Full disclosure-Limestone played a tough conference game vs. Washington Fri. night-short turnaround.
-Sometimes the planets are in perfect alignment, and all facets of a team’s game click at the same time-the perfect storm. That was the case in this game.
-It was apparent that the Limestone coaches hadn’t seen Galesburg (I’ll guarantee that Massey had seen Limestone). If they had, they wouldn’t have come out in m-t-m, given Galesburg’s track record of poor 3pt. shooting and lack of much of a post game. One would assume they would have come out in 1-2-2, rather than switching to it later after the damage had been done.
-Galesburg had a plethora (as Howard Cosell would say-check out youtube for his interviews with Muhammad Ali-priceless) wide open 3pt. looks; against their track record so far, knocked down a high pct. of them-6-10 3pt. FGs in 1st half.
-Now it’s back down to earth from this emotional high, looking to a tough week ahead.

Thurs. Dec. 6
Galesburg (5-3,1-1) at RI Alleman (4-4,1-1)
https://www.galesburg.com/sports/201812 ... ng-streaks
At last, a good, in-depth preview; hope that continues.

Last year- Galesburg 40-30, 43-17

Lost
Starters
Annalise Connolly 5’4” G
Mackenzie Larsen 5’4” G
Return
Gabby Loiz 5’9” Sr.
Nakita Woods 5’6” Sr.
Bailey Gorgal 5’8” Sr. (season-ending knee injury)
Parker Georlett 6’0” Sr.
De’Ajah Woods 5’6 G Sr.
Starters
Gabi Loiz 5’9” G Sr.
DeAjah Woods 5’6” G Sr.
Natika Woods 5’6” G Sr.
Maddie Porter 6’0” F So.
Parker Georlett 6’0” Post Sr. (I believe she has been starting in Gorgal’s place).

L-Annawan 55-42
W-Peoria Christian 64-20
L-Geneseo 50-31
W-Sherrard 48-26
W-Peru-St. Bede 51-35
W-United Township 42-37
L-Geneseo 55-36
L-Quincy 55-38

-Quincy’s pressure forced a ton of TOs early; put Alleman in a hole they couldn’t climb out of. How much, if any, will Massey press?
-As Galesburg’s lack of size has made rebounding an issue, Alleman’s size could be a major factor.
-Historically, Galesburg has not shot well in Don Morris Gym.
-The UT game is the closest to what you could call a quality win. The two Geneseo blowouts and the Annawan loss look bad.

Sat. Dec, 8
Galesburg (5-3) at Canton (3-3; play East Peoria Fri. night)

Last year- Canton 48-33, 59-35 (Macomb Regional)
Taken from last year’s game program:
Lose
Starter
Marissa Murphy 5’8”
Bench
Brooke Henry 5’8”
Claire Ford 5’1”
Return
Anna Plumer 5’10” G/F Sr.
Blair Jacobus 5’7”G Jr.
Tori Oaks 5’8” F Jr.
Cassidy Fawcett 5’6”G Jr.
Sydney Hannam 5’6” G Jr.
Sophie Oaks 5’3” G Sr.

-The game comes down to if Galesburg can handle Canton’s defensive pressure.
-Canton is going to come out with the same level of intensity that Washington laid on them in the Thanksgiving Tournament.
-Last year’s games, TOs-24 and 31, respectively. If this doesn’t improve, it’s going to be a long afternoon.

Galesburg at RI Alleman-Addendum

Riverdale (2A) 40 Alleman 35

-Long-time Alleman coach Jay Hatch beats old team.
-Alleman coach Megan McCracken, "We gave up too many offensive rebounds and second-chance points. That's something we'll be working on going forward."
-With their size and experience, and they're getting beaten physically by a team that is barely out of 1A?

-Allmn went from 6:00 of 2nd qtr-up 20-12, scoreless to 3:57 of 3rd qtr.-FT 26-21.

4th Qtr.
-@6:00 33-29-Allmn scores inside 3 consecutive possessions; Massey t.o.; Gales answers 4-0 to 37-29.
-37-31 @3:05-Gale forcing Allmn to burn a lot of clock working for a shot.
-@2:18 Gales starts working clock.
-Under 1:00 Range misses front end of 1&1.
-About :23 Loiz scores inside.
-Allmn fc press-not effective
-About :19 McCarthy 1 of 2 FTs 38-33.

Galesburg struggling to be able to guard a team of Alleman’s caliber does not bode well for Sat. game at Canton. If this Canton team is like others previously, they will run deliberate, controlled possessions-Gales will have to defend for extended periods.

As if the atmosphere needed to be heightened further, Canton will have a ceremony celebrating the 40th anniversary of the girls program. Canton is going to come out with a huge adrenalin rush-Gales had better be ready right out of the gate.

No Register-Mail byline. Pulled the article off the wire. Guess the part-timer they use to cover the team was either out of hours or doing a profile article like the one he did on the janitor which dominated the first page of the sports section.

Announcers’ Stats-The second announcer showed up this time.

Galesburg vs. Moline Addendum

Massey Postgame- “…Daija’s incredible in terms of…she doesn’t just get the rebounds that are to her…one time there, at the end, they shot and Daija was at the far side of the basket, and she got the rebound at the other side, going thru to the ball…Riley, early on was fabulous attacking the basket…late…where she drove and dumped it in to Chloe.”

Announcer- “Tough games on Saturday (Maine South, Fox Lake). They have personal coaches, personal trainers.”
Massey-“It’s the world of athletics today…Try to convince our kids…don’t have to be a single-sport kid…off-season, you have to figure out how to make yourself better, and that’s not just the month of June…what you do in the fall as far as working on your shot…because the people we compete against, that’s what they’re doing.”

I have an idea: stop p*ssing around with volleyball and get into open gym.
