I also missed, thanks to MissourValleyUnited for pointing this out, that Long Beach State is now the Sharks as well (announced in May). So The Beach was first. Maybe Longwood will also change their name to the Sharks, just for all out confusion.

Purdue Fort Wayne to make a major announcement regarding their athletic program tomorrow:

Jeff Goodman is reporting that the announcement will be that Purdue Fort Wayne is heading to the Horizon League.

Move makes a lot of sense from a geographic perspective as they are in a far better footprint than they would be in the Summit League.

Squirrel and TAS, any chance this move accelerates Bellarmine moving to the Horizon League? Who does the Summit League go after?

This is very interesting, with ramifications in scheduling, setting aside Bellarmine for a second.

This puts the Horizon at 11. 20 game double round robin if they want it. Going to 20 conference games seems like the trend du jour these days, from the big boys and the little guys, with the mid-majors in between being the ones against it. Is the Horizon going to 20 conference games?

If not, Bellarmine kind of is an obvious candidate for spot 12 in the Horizon.

Summit picked up UMKC, so they can sit tight at 9, or do whatever they fancy. Maybe they try to end the WAC. Please for the love of god raid the WAC.

Look for Horizon to bring in Robert Morris. Checks off private and "eastern" which Detroit will be pushing for. Opening new arena.

Bellarmine and USI designated rainy day options.

Tommies might be working strings for a waiver to straight-shoot from D3 to Summit.

This makes sense considering they're losing UConn:

If approved that would give the Summit League 10 teams (with Fort Wayne leaving and UMKC coming in).

If they join the Pioneer League, that conference would have 11 members (with Presbyterian soon coming on board). If they join the Valley, it would give the league 12 members which would give it the opportunity to split and have a championship game.

They gotta come up with a better name than Tommies, though.

Also, this thread is coming up on 10 years of existence.

This thread has stayed together long enough to get an autobid to all the NCAA tournaments.

Tarleton State (part of the Texas A&M system) students have approved an intercollegiate athletics fee increase, which is pending Board of Regents approval, but clears the path for the school to reclassify to Division 1 and join the WAC following a September 30th invitation.

https://tarletonsports.com/news/2019/10 ... asses.aspx

https://jtacnews.com/11689/news/the-sta ... niversity/

They would play football as an FCS independent, at least initially.

They would join in 2020 along with Dixie State, and give the WAC a decidedly southwestern flavor, and perhaps serve as an enticement for someone like a West Texas A&M to make the return to DI. Chicago State and Seattle now even bigger outliers than before.

Also, Alaska schools are considering all possibilities, including disbandment, and merging athletics departments (a la LIU) of their Fairbanks and Anchorage campuses, following the mass exodus from their hockey conference the WCHA, which will leave the conference with the 2 Alaska schools and Alabama-Huntsville.

Your 2020-21 WAC (barring further subsequent changes) will look like this:

Cal Baptist
Chicago State
Dixie State
Grand Canyon
New Mexico State
Seattle
Tarleton State
Texas Rio Grand Valley
Utah Valley

Adds: Dixie State, Tarleton State
Exits: UMKC (Summit), Cal State Bakersfield (Big West)

North Dakota State
Omaha
Oral Roberts
South Dakota

*St. Thomas (2021)
UMKC

Adds: *St. Thomas, UMKC
Exits: Fort Wayne

*Pending NCAA waiver approval for direct reclassification from DIII.

In 50000 years, when society collapses in a zombie apocalypse, and all recreational activities end.....the zombies will form 6 different universities that will join the WAC for all sports to keep the conference alive again.

Although the WAC is doing a halfway decent job at trying to build around NMSU.

Summit looks like a solid regional conference...with the exception of WIU, who sort of stick out like a sore thumb now.

Also, finally, the Pioneer League is said to be interested in St. Thomas, and kind of oldish news, but worth repeating that Presbyterian is also joining the Pioneer for football in 2021. So, that non-scholarship football conference will have teams from the following states:

California
Florida
Indiana
Iowa
Kentucky
*Minnesota (pending St. Thomas)
New York
North Carolina
Ohio
South Carolina

If I'm Denver, I'd make the move to the WAC, but probably worth monitoring for stability and strength first.

NMSU, Grand Canyon, and Utah Valley are decent on the hoops side, with considerable growth potential, which is really what you want. Cal Baptist made a solid first impression. The WAC is also probably trying to do whatever they can to shake the Cougars out of the league.
