Championship Week 2019 Thread

Post by Bluejaygrad03 » Mon Mar 04, 2019 10:06 pm

Many of the low-major and mid-major conference tournaments are starting this week. The Atlantic Sun (1 seed Lipscomb) conference tournament started tonight with the Big South (1 seed Campbell), Horizon League (1 seed Wright State) and the Patriot League (1 seed Colgate) starting tomorrow night. Other conference tournaments starting over the next few days include the MAAC, Missouri Valley, Northeast Conference, Ohio Valley Conference, Southern Conference, Summit League, and the West Coast Conference.

In the Atlantic Sun, Florida Gulf Coast was the only higher seed not to hold serve tonight, losing to NJIT.

The OVC, Atlantic Sun, and SoCon tournaments look like they could be a lot of fun this year.

EIU loses to UT Martin 78-71 in the 1st round of the OVC Tournament. Josiah Wallace led the Panthers with 26 points. Rade Kukobat and Ben Harvey each scored 11 with Mack Smith adding 10.

The Panthers finish the season 14-18 overall. They were a team that just ran out of gas late in the season as they end the season losing 6 straight and 9 of their last 10. While this is obviously a disappointing finish, they were still a fairly young team with only 2 seniors, neither of whom were major contributors. The team will have mostly juniors and seniors next season and could make some noise if things break just right for them.

UT Martin moves on to play Jacksonville State tomorrow night.

In addition to the Valley bid that's being discussed on the other board, there were two other NCAA tournament bids clinched today. Gardner-Webb won the Big South tournament championship today, defeating Radford 76-65. It is the Runnin' Bulldogs' first ever tournament appearance. Liberty won the Atlantic Sun tournament championship, defeating Lipscomb 74-68. It is the Flames' 4th tournament appearance, their first since 2013.

Only thing of note that is going on in other tournaments playing today is Monmouth, the 6 seed in the MAAC tournament. They upset the 2 seed Canisius today after upsetting the 3 seed Quinnipac yesterday. The Hawks, if they were to upset top-seeded Iona tomorrow night, would be headed to Dayton for the play-in game as their record would stand at 15-20.

Rooting for New Orleans, coached by Mark Slessinger of Aurora. If they win, it would be his 2nd NCAA bid in his 7 years there.

And if Abilene Christian wins, it will be their first tournament appearance as a D-I program. They moved from D-II to D-I in 2013 and became a full D-I program in 2017.
